Day 1 - Our gathering point for all drivers and co drivers will be late afternoon at the Reina Cristina Hotel in Algeciras. Drivers from the UK who booked with an agent will be collected from Gibraltar airport and taken to the Hotel. Before dinner we will meet in the bar for a briefing to talk about the trip and particularly our first days’ journey. We will also be giving you Nomadz caps, teeshirts, car stickers plus route notes and maps.

Day 2 - After breakfast we have a five minute drive to Algeciras Port. We take the 09.00 fast ferry – 1 hr to Tangiers - or if weather is bad, the slow ferry taking 2 ½ hrs. The drive from Tangiers to Meknes is an easy one (approx 300kms). We will be travelling on motorway, passing through several interesting market towns. As we near Meknes you will notice that most local inhabitants go about their business in horse-drawn carts. We stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant and aim to arrive at our hotel in Meknes, the spiritual capital of Morocco, in time for a swim. We take an early evening walk to the Bab Mansour Gate which is the impressive entrance to the Medina where we enjoy a delicious meal in a private Riad.

Day 3 – 08.00 departure for a long day’s drive through the Middle Atlas with its forests of giant cedar which are often snow covered and home to troops of Barbary apes. After our picnic lunch we begin our climb over the narrow mountain passes that wind through the High Atlas. This is a spectactular drive passing Berber villages which seem to cling to the mountainside. The drive culminates at the awe-inspiring Todra Gorge, the gateway to the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, where we stay in a very pretty hotel on the edge of the Sahara.

Day 4 – Late breakfast is followed by an easy day’s drive, some of which is off-road. The first part of the journey takes us through many small villages packed with enthusiastic children. We stop for drinks at the Fossil Café and then on to Alnif with a picnic lunch on the way to Rissani We arrive at the Auberge Kasbah Dekaoua where we stay for the next two nights. This is a very special oasis hotel situated in the desert with lovely gardens, a large swimming pool, tennis court and horses for keen riders.

Day 5 – Breakfast in your own time before driving to Erg Chebbi, the highest sand dunes in Morocco. Here we have great fun practising our driving skills in the sand. A delicious lunch by the pool at the Auberge followed by a free afternoon and the chance to explore nearby towns. This area is famous for fossils. Perhaps end the day with a walk or camel ride in the dunes to watch the sun go down.

Day 6 – Early morning start with a drive round the Erg Chebbi dunes to pick up our guide who will take us through this part of the Sahara. Today’s drive will be mostly sand with a corrugated surface. We will see no one apart from the odd nomad or camel train which will bring home the vastness and solitude of the desert. Picnic lunch under a Berber tent followed by an afternoon drink stop at the Three Brothers Oasis. From here we head towards a military post that is close to our Two Dog campsite. We arrive before dark in order to set up camp. Supper (warmly dressed) around the camp fire.

Day 7 - After a spectacular sunrise and breakfast of pancakes and coffee we head towards Tagounite. Today’s drive is mostly stoney with corrugated surfaces. We pass through impressive volcanic mountain ranges with panoramic views of the valleys below. On reaching the market town of Tagounite we have a well-earned coffee break and say goodbye to our guide. Following a short drive on tarmac to M’Hamid, we arrive at El Pasha Hotel which is situated in a stunning oasis with a swimming pool and shady gardens. We stay in the hotel’s large comfortable tents and dine under the stars.

Day 8 - Today we will be joined by our new guide Abdul for our most challenging day’s driving. We start with a fairly easy drive to the Sacred Oasis at Irriki, which looks as if it has remained unchanged since biblical times. From here we have our most difficult drive through the Chachaga Dunes. The half hour drive will really test your driving skills through deep sand. Don’t worry our staff vehicle will be close by to help dig you out!! We picnic near Foum Zuid, an old Foreign Legion post and then – horray we hit tarmac road for the remainder of the safari. Tonight we camp in the Anti Atlas mountains close to an oasis with a small collection of Berber houses. Another chance to test our camp cooking!

Day 9 - We visit the Berber houses to take a mint tea with the locals. Our drive today is one of the most spectacular routes in Morocco; winding its way up and down the High Atlas past isolated villages and eventually reaching the Tizi-n-Test Pass with its breathtaking views across the Sous valley to the Anti Atlas mountains. This can be tricky driving, especially in snow. We stop for a tagine lunch beside a stream oppositive Mount Toubkal (over 4,000m) and then push on to Marrakech. We expect to arrive at the beautiful Tichka Hotel by early evening. We have a night visit to the Medina starting at the famous Djemna el Fna Square with its acrobats, snake charmers and storytellers. Our last dinner is at a restaurant overlooking this exotic square.

Day 10 - The Nomadz crew will leave early to drive back to Spain in time to catch the 3.00 pm fast ferry from Tangiers to Algeciras. Those wishing to join us are welcome. It is an easy journey of 500kms, the majority of which is motorway. Alternatively feel free to spend a few more days exploring Morocco on your own.
